Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has substantial evidence as an effective treatment for a wide range of common mental health difficulties in adults. This includes major mood disorders (eg. Depression, Bipolar Affective Disorder) and anxiety disorders (eg. Panic Disorder, Social Phobia, Generalised Anxiety Disorder).
CBT is also useful in enhancing adjustment to stressful life situations and other problems.
CBT involves learning to understand how symptoms develop and are maintained. CBT aims to help people feel better and perform better in important life activities by altering patterns of thinking and behaviour.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a type of therapy specifically designed to teach better skills in managing emotional dysregulation (intense, easily triggered and changeable emotions) that contribute to difficulties in behaviour, relationships and thinking.
DBT has substantial evidence as an effective treatment for people with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) but may also be effective with other complex mental health problems.
The primary goal of DBT is “to build a life worth living”. DBT is often delivered in a combination of both individual and group therapy sessions.
There is a range of modern psychological therapies available. Many have been developed to overcome limitations of older therapy approaches, to target specific symptoms or conditions more effectively, or to promote personal growth / wellbeing in otherwise healthy individuals.
Examples include:
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)
Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC)
Schema Therapy (ST).
